Autobiographical abstraction meets geometric rigor and painstaking application of oil paint sticks to the surface in McArthur Binion's ghost: rhythms: III. Binion's artworks often feature squares of laser prints of personal documents such as birth certificates and old passports to create a semi-concealed undersurface upon which the artist applies layers of oil stick that mimic basketry or fiber work. When comparing his artwork to highly objective minimalist paintings (a form more commonly associated with white American artists), Binion says,"I'm making abstraction personal."
