Based on the artist's biographical data and considerations related to the fashion of the time, Sandrini suggests to date the painting around 1805-1806, that is the last year in which the painter was in Parma; the cuts by the Napoleonic prefect Junot to the artistic activities in which Lucatelli, of whom two other previous portraits of Bodoni are known, had been engaged since 1803 (copy of the frescoes in San Paolo) could be the reason of his departure and the consequent incompleteness of the artwork.
