early 1900s

The Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art
Cleveland, United States

In this six-panel folding screen, gibbons of different colors are shown playfully interacting with each other. While gibbons generally symbolize good fortunes, these specific gibbons paired with autumn foliage refers to professional success, such as passing the government examination and getting promoted to a higher government position. A similar example of playful gibbons once decorated the wall of the royal bed chamber in the Gyeongbok palace.
