The gig was developed in the late 17th century as a response to the increasingly congested traffic in European cities. The coach as a mode of travel and emblem of social station had become popular among the rich and those who aspired to loftier social stations. A small, two-wheeled vehicle was needed to maneuver around the more cumbersome four-wheeled conveyances.
