Ginevra and Ambrogiolo

Mino Maccari1967

Palazzo Pretorio e Casa Boccaccio

Palazzo Pretorio e Casa Boccaccio
Certaldo, Italy

The scene alludes to Ambrogiolo's deception and his punishment, ordered by the Sultan (Giovanni Boccaccio, 'Decameron', giornata II, novella 9). Mino Maccari is one of the most representative figures in the history of Italian art of the Twentieth Century. Expert in the various painting techniques (watercolour, oil, drawing, etching and linoleography) has the theme of costume analysis, among which erotomania and the 'world in ontura'(Longhi). His satire, of the highest stylistic quality, is guided by a marked caricature estrus, a penetrating observation of the real and an all-Tuscan savoury.
