Gingerbread from Toruń, known as "pierniki toruńskie", is one of Poland’s most famous traditional sweets, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Toruń’s location on major trade routes allowed local bakers to access exotic spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, which gave the gingerbread its distinctive aroma and flavor. By the 14th century, the city’s gingerbread was already renowned across Europe, often served at royal courts and presented as prestigious gifts.

What makes Toruń gingerbread unique is its rich spice blend, long shelf life, and artistic decoration. Traditionally, the dough was pressed into beautifully carved wooden molds depicting saints, animals, or city emblems, then baked to a deep golden color. Some varieties were filled with fruit preserves or covered in chocolate. Today, the Toruń Gingerbread Museum celebrates this centuries-old craft, allowing visitors to learn about the history, symbolism, and techniques that made this sweet a proud symbol of Polish culinary heritage.

Here you can see the tin is decorated with the inscription: "factory of gingerbread, sugars and chocolate products J. Ruchniewicz Toruń, phone number 522." The side features St. James's Church, a panorama of Toruń, the town hall, and an assortment of gingerbread products, including Toruń Katarzynki (catherines), cobblestones, and hearts.
