The name Girgaum comes from giri (a hill) gram (a village), as it situated at the base of Malabar Hill. Another derivation is gidh from gridhara (Vulture) - village, due to the presence of a lot of vultures over the tower of Silence to the north of Girgaum, which can be assumed to be a later addition after the advent of the Parsees. The Road leading to Palav Bander (the old native name for Apollo Bandar) was called Palva Road till the 1860s and was later changed to Girgaum Road. The famous Hormusji B Wadia Temple was built on this road near Chandanwadi in the 1830s. The Girgaum Road was renamed Jaggannath Shunkerseth Maarg in the 1980s after Jaggannath Shankar Sheth, a Business, Philanthropist, and one of the few who changed the social and physical infrastructure of Bombay.
