Girl by a High Chair

Mauritshuis
Den Haag, Netherlands

An anonymous girl aged about three is posing next to a high chair. She is beautifully dressed and is wearing a garland of flowers on her head, gold chains and bracelets, and a gold rattle with rock crystal. The parents of this toddler were obviously well-to-do.

Flinck painted with the broad, free brushstrokes he had learned from his master Rembrandt. But he painted the child’s face in great detail, with subtle colours and fine glimmers of light, so that it becomes the centre of attention.
