Artist's Statement: "Arab Mosaic designs known as Zellige are designs that can be found on instruments, furniture, jewelry boxes, chess or board games, as well as buildings and clothing. The designs have been prominent in my work for the last several years by recreating them in paint on canvases or panels.This process allows me to incorporate drawings of buildings, people and situations that currently define the atmosphere of Syria and parts of the Middle East including Iraq (my father’s homeland) and Lebanon. I create a certain aftermath of a fog of destruction that currently engulfs the region while still being able to see the beautiful designs hidden underneath the layers of colors and paint."
