Wang Daoyuan was from Changde, Hunan province. He attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1919 and studied western painting from Fujishima Takeji. Since 1923 he traveled frequently between Tokyo and Shanghai, worked as a faculty in Nanjing College of Arts, Shanghai Eastern Art School, Shanghai Arts School, and as the Central News Agency’s special correspondent in Shanghai and Tokyo, as well as the Japanese Affair investigator for the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.He was a professor in the Guangzhou Municipal College of Fine Arts, the South China institute of Literature and Art and the Central South College of Fine Arts and a member of the Storm Society and the Chinese Independent Art Association. He founded Shanghai Art University in 1925, established the Chinese Artists Society in Japan with Ni Yide in 1928 and founded Shanghai Arts School in 1930.
