The earliest American Girl Scouts uniforms were copied from pictures of English Girl Guides, who wore a blouse and skirt, bloomers, and a triangular sateen neckerchief. The neckerchief was both unifying and practical -- if necessary, it could be used as a sling, bandage, or signal flag.
