Girl with a Hat was painted by the South African artist Christo Coetzee (1929-2000). During his student years, Coetzee was known for his small studies of women, he affectionately called his "poppies", an Afrikaans term for dolls. When his lecturer Marjorie Long, saw these fantastical portraits she compared it to the work of French artists like Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and Jean-Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940).
