Van Doesburg designed the composition of circles and triangles using a ruler and compass. He did not, however, intend to create an entirely abstract representation, as he still found it important in 1914 that the viewer could recognize the image. He exhibited the painting in 1916, adding the following comment in the catalogue: "Accountability: an emotion adopting a visible form, a colour and line is a painting".
