- About the author: Wacław Szymanowski, (1859 Warsaw – 1930 ibidem), A painter and sculptor associated with Art Nouveau and the Young Poland Modernism. He studied the School of Drawing under the direction of Wojciech Gerson in Warsaw, then in Paris in the studio of Cyprian Godebski and at École des Beaux-Arts under the direction of Eugène Delaplanche. He also studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In the period 1895 –1905 he lived in Paris, in the years: 1913, 1921–1922 he stayed in Italy, in 1922 he returned to Poland for good. At the beginning he mainly dealt with painting, creating realistic images of rural themes, landscapes and portraits. In the early 1890s he moved away from genre scenes and turned to Symbolism, also in sculpture, which ultimately became his only domain of interest. In his early objects we can observe a great care for detail and realistic modelling, typical of the academic aesthetics. Over time, inspired by the works of Constantin Meunier and Auguste Rodin, the form of Szymanowski’s sculptures was subject to the modernist synthesizing. There appeared a smooth, Art Nouveau contour and a sketchy approach to the solid. The artist’s favourite motif was an asymmetrical dynamic form set in the shape of a wave. Concerning the subject matter, he most often took up historical and martyrdom motives rooted in the history of Poland, as in the famous Procession to the Wawel Castle dating back to 1908, unfinished.
