The introduction by Ugo Monneret briefly presents the situation of late nineteenth-century architecture, which sees in Europe architects such as Horta, Makintosch, Wagner, Hofmann, Olbrich, Saarinen and in Italy Giuseppe Sommaruga.
A pupil at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts of Camillo Boito, the Sommaruga was highlighted with the first prize at the International Architecture Competition in Turin in 1890. At the time he was already a remarkably established professional, having designed the ossuary in those years of Palestro and some residential buildings in Milan. The construction of the Castiglioni palace built in 1901-1903 made it the most prominent personality of Milanese liberty.
Sommaruga was the only Italian architect of the modernist line to create his own personal style, vigorously plastic but also interested in functional criteria. His most significant works include the Castiglioni palace in Milan (1900-1903), the Salmoiraghi building in Milan (1906), the Faccanoni villa in Sarnico (1907), the Faccanoni mausoleum in the cemetery of Sarnico (1908), the villa Romeo (now clinic Columbus in Milan) (1911-1913), various small villas in Rome, the Palace Hotel and the Hotel Three crosses in Campo dei Fiori in Varese with the arrival station of the funicular, a singular premise to the experiences of Antonio Sant 'Elia. The volume contains the plans of some of the works shown below in photography with reference to the Roman number of photographic images, then sixty photographs of buildings made and some drawings (plans and elevations).
