At the center of the courtyard stands the statue that now lends its name to the space. Mercury was erected here in 1967. Its torso dates to the first century A.D., with additions and restorations added in the 18th century. The statue had been loaned to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, but then was put up for sale at the Royal-Athena Galleries in New York City. The Villa Terrace Garden Club purchased it and made a gift of it to the Villa and people of Milwaukee.
