The Gladstone bag, first introduced by London manufacturer J.G. Beard, was named after the politician W.E. Gladstone who served as Britain’s prime minister on four separate occasions between 1868 and 1894. It was designed to be a practical bag for men but came to be particularly associated with medical doctors. It is therefore also known as a doctor’s bag.
