Glass beaded necklaces were one of the favourite grave goods in pagan burials of Saxon women in the early Middle Ages. The art of making glass beads was continued by the Franks according to Roman tradi¬tions; they traded the beads as luxury goods also in Northern Germany. To this day, glass beads are made in a very similar technique in Northern Africa.
