The humorous “Glutton” sandstone figure is an excellent example of the Baroque fashion for gnomes. The gnomes, whose bulky stature was in sharp contrast to the ideals of beauty in the late Baroque period, adorned the gardens of the urban upper class in Nuremberg. The gnomes parodied human weaknesses, as the “Glutton” clearly shows: With his huge and overhanging belly, he is a caricature of overindulgence.
