In his readings in search of exotic images, Ligabue was attracted by the gnu, the large horse-like ox, that recurs in fact in numerous works of the artist. Against the background of an imaginary African landscape, built with large fields of pure color clearly divided into sky and earth, the massive figure of the quadruped with a brown coat and white mane and tail stands out in profile, made in an extremely simplified way and finished with a dark contour line.
