Glass with filigree motifs, as in this goblet, is called vetro a retorti ("glass with twisted motifs") and vetro a fili ("glass with threads"). To create it, canes of milky white glass are embedded in transparent colorless glass, then twisted and stretched to create canes with a striped pattern inside them. This goblet was formed by alternating two types of those canes, heating them in the kiln, and then blowing the vessel while patting it with a rod coated with transparent glass. The slender ring inserted between the bowl and stem of the goblet accentuates the lacy delicacy of the filigree decor.
