The most popular Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism (China, Korea and Japan). Deity of mercy, whose name in Chinese means, “she who hears the cries of mankind”. Introduced to China with the arrival of Buddhism in the first century AD. Guanyin was initially the Bodhistavva Avalokietsvara, a masculine figure who was gradually transformed into a feminine figure as Buddhism got naturalised in China.
