THE TRAVELLERS

The photograph captures a large part of the group that travelled to Egypt in the winter of 1900–1901. In her travel diary, Wilhelmina von Hallwyl's lady's companion, Ida Uhse, lists all of those present:

“Participants: Count Walther and Countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, Miss Ida Uhse, Mrs Johanna Kempe with Miss Elma Hök, who arrived in Constantinople on the 4th of May. Lieutenant Wilhelm von Geijer with his wife Irma, née von Hallwyl, who arrived at Naples on the 11th of Nov. Military attaché Henrik de Maré with his wife Ellen, née von Hallwyl, who arrived at Cairo on the 23rd of Dec. and returned home to Berlin on the 14th of Jan. 1901.”

Johanna Kempe was Wilhelmina von Hallwyl's mother and Elma Hök was Johanna's lady's companion. Irma and Ellen were Walther and Wilhelmina's daughters. Ellen and Henric de Maré's son Rolf, 12 years old, had to stay at home in Berlin.
