Gold and turquoise nose ornament in the shape of a crescent moon ML100851

This is a gold and turquoise nose ring with a crescent shape, and two hangings in the shape of stars. Nose rings are among the most important body ornaments of political and religious leaders of the Moche society, northern coast of Peru. These not only distinguished those personages with a high status, but symbolically transformed them in beings with special powers. Some nose rings are reminiscent of the feline’s whiskers, others show symbols associated with mythological scenes and rituals. (UH)

Esta es una nariguera de oro y turquesa en forma de luna creciente, con dos colgajos en sus extremos forma de estrellas. Entre los ornamentos corporales de los líderes políticos y religiosos Mochica, destacan las narigueras. Con ellas no sólo se conseguía la distinción clara del estatus de quienes las usaban sino también la transformación de éstos en seres sobrenaturales. Algunas narigueras nos recuerdan a los bigotes del felino; otras, muestran símbolos asociados a escenas mitológicas y rituales. (UH)
