This is a golden attire of a ruler of ancient Peru, consisting of a crown with four feathers, ear ornaments, necklace and an embossed breastplate and two shoulder pads. This is the only complete Chimu gold attire known to be in a collection or museum worldwide. The few clues to its provenance state that ot could have been part of a funerary equipment of a great lord buried in the adobe city of Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu Empire. This ceremonial attire expresses the power of the supreme leader in all its glory and his symbiotic relationship with the sun as a divinity of the upper world. The crown and the edges of the pectoral present feather shape elements, thus carrying the symbolism of the birds, which are beings that link the earth with the upper world. In the ear ornaments the face of the great Chimu lord is depicted, and his standing figure is portrayed on the shoulders pads, holding in each hand severed heads. In the feathers of the crown and in the breastplate, profile characters with feline faces and crescent shaped headdresses parade. All these communicated the Great Chimu Lord function as a connector between the underworld and the world of the gods. (UH)

Este es un atuendo de oro de un gobernante del antiguo Perú, formado por una corona con cuatro plumas, orejeras, collar, pectoral y hombreras repujadas. Esta es la única indumentaria de oro Chimú completa que se conoce en colecciones y museos del mundo. Los pocos indicios sobre su procedencia señalan que habría sido parte de un ajuar funerario de un gran señor enterrado en la ciudad de barro de Chan Chan, la capital del imperio Chimú. Se trata de una indumentaria que expresa en todo su esplendor, el poder del gobernante supremo y su relación simbólica con el sol como divinidad máxima del mundo superior. La corona y los bordes del pectoral presentan elementos en formas de plumas, las cuales representan a las aves, que son los seres que más se pueden acercar al sol. En las orejeras, es el rostro del gran señor Chimú el que se representa, y en las hombreras aparece parado frontalmente, sujetando cabezas decapitadas en cada mano. En las plumas de la corona y en el pectoral, desfilan personajes de perfil con rostros felínicos y tocados en forma de media luna, comunicando su función de contacto entre el mundo terrenal y el mundo de los dioses.
