Gold Coast came under British rule mid 19th Century and was administered by Sierra Leone. A post office was established at Cape Coast Castle in 1853. The first stamps of Gold Coast in 1879 bore the likeness of Queen Victoria. The Gold Coast became Ghana and the first stamps of independent Ghana were issued in 1957.
