This medal commemorates the centenary of the formation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1602. The obverse of the medal depicts a crowned female figure, seated, holding a wreathed sword in right hand with her left arm resting on a pedestal with cornucopias emptying their contents to left and right. The reverse of the medal shows an antique ship under sail passing columns of Hercules with the sun rising on the horizon.
