This small bar of 22-carat gold was found in the vicinity of Odijk in 2008. It weighs 20.6 grams and has been rolled into a spiral to make it easy to transport, for instance on a length of string or a strap. The bar was originally longer, but a piece has been chopped off at one end. Research reveals that the small gold ingot dates from the 6th century AD. Although there are other examples of spiral bullion from the same period, especially in Scandinavia, this rolled-up strip is unique. No other objects were found with it, which suggests that it probably does not come from a grave or an offering. Perhaps a trader lost this golden ingot while crossing the hills near Utrecht.
