Gold is a work by the German artist Neo Rauch (Leipzig, Germany, 1960). Rauch paints alternate universes in which anxiety and unpredictability prevail. His style evokes the compositions of Old Masters, Social Realists, and Surrealists. Rauch grew up in East Germany, and his bizarre landscapes suggest the discomfort of life under the shadow of the Cold War. He is the best-known artist of the Leipzig New School, and arguably responsible for the renaissance of German painting at the end of the 20th century. His enigmatic compositions masterfully combine figurative imagery and surreal abstraction, situating a peculiar cast of characters in strange and dreamlike scenes.
