In 1916 four solid gold neck rings were found in the forelands of the River IJssel in Gelderland, near Olst. They may have been made from melted-down solidi, Late Roman gold coins. Their simple decorations are typically Germanic in style. The gold is of an extremely fine quality, 22 carat! These items of jewellery may have belonged to prominent Germanic tribal chiefs, who maintained ties with the Roman Empire. They may have cast their neck rings into the river here as offerings to the gods.
