This fan features feathers from a large bird of prey, most likely a Golden Eagle. The main feathers display a natural gradient from creamy white bases to dark brown tips, characteristics associated with juvenile Golden Eagles. Each feather is accented at the base with vibrant red, white, and blue feathers and bound with blue thread. The feathers are individually wrapped in white leather and affixed to a white leather handle, from which a series of twisted leather fringe cords extend.
Fans like this are used in ceremonial and dance contexts across many Native communities and may serve as spiritual tools, honor items, or personal regalia.
This fan was obtained through a Department of the Interior confiscation and distributed by Federal District Court. Its construction likely dates to the 1970s.
