As an alternative to buying sometimes scarce and most times expensive new equipment, used golf balls were often repainted to prolong their playing life.

Using the enamel was a messy business. The directions asked users to place a small amount of enamel in the palms of both hands and move the ball in a circular motion until it was evenly covered.
