Born in St. Louis, sculptor Bessie Potter Vonnoh was best known for small bronzes of genre subjects and garden fountains (including the Burnette Fountain in Central Park Conservatory Garden). Her objective was "to prove that as perfect a likeness and as much beauty could be produced in statuettes twelve inches in height . . . as could be had in the life-size and colossal productions suitable for so few houses." She was one of the female assistants to Lorado Taft with a group nicknamed the “White Rabbits.” They assisted him with large-scale pieces at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair Exhibition.
