This is a picture of Mt.Penglai (Horai-san), which has been rumored to be home to hermits since ancient China. The mountain is imaginary, worshipped by people, who commend their eternal souls to the gods. Shunkyo, however, vividly expressed the landscape as if he had actually visited. He successfully depicted the people who carry packages and exchange greetings, and the clear water and realistic mountains of surrounding areas. His delicate touch is exquisite. When this work was unveiled in Kyoto, a pack of visitors admired his talent.
