Gown with a bodice and skirt in pearl grey gros de Naples with a multicoloured floral print design and moiré effect. The short bodice has a square neckline and is boned. All the edges of the collar, neckline and front are cut in zigzag and bound with a self-coloured silk satin edging and deep purple velvet . The long skirt with its train is fuller at the back, and the deep folds have gored pieces inserted between them to give the train volume.
The decorative techniques used in this gown were in fashion in the 1870s, when the emphasis was on concentrating the volume of the skirts at the rear of the body. Here the inspiration from models of the previous century can be seen, in the treatment of the sleeves and details of the skirt which take us back to the silhouettes created by the polonaise gowns of the second half of the 18th century.
