Graffito in the Beauchamp Tower, Tower of London

Graffito (graffiti) of the Dudley family coat of arms in the Beauchamp Tower at the Tower of London. The carving is attributed to John Dudley, son of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. John and his three brothers were imprisoned in the Tower of London in the aftermath of their father's plot to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne. The carving depicts a plant for each Dudley brother – roses for Ambrose, carnations (known as gillyflowers) for Guildford, oak leaves (robur in Latin) for Robert and honeysuckle for Henry.
