Illustrations for Dr John Davy’s account of a new Mediterranean island, named (and claimed) Graham Island by the British Royal Navy. A now-submerged volcano, it sank by the end of 1831, leaving behind only territorial disputes between Britain, France and Sicily. John Davy’s brother, Sir Humphry Davy, also wrote extensively on the chemistry of volcanoes.
