A central figure among the second generation of Hudson River school artists, Haseltine was born into a family of artists, including his mother and both his brothers. He moved to Rome, Italy, in 1869 and traveled throughout Europe. He took sketching trips to Venice regularly from the early 1870s to the late 1890s. Here, he shows a panoramic view of the city, with the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Salute visible behind fishing boats.
