Granida and Daifalo

Joan van Noort17th century

Art Gallery of New South Wales

The subject is taken from a Dutch pastoral play of 1605 by Pieter Hooft. The Persian princess Granida chances upon the shepherd Daifilo and asks him for water. Daifilo immediately falls in love with her and, as the story continues, must overcome various obstacles at the Persian court to win his loved one. Van Noordt’s work shows a healthy Dutch disdain for the classically-inspired idealism of Italian art.
