Frances Browne (1816-1879), the ‘Blind Poetess of Ulster’, was born in Donegal. She lost her sight when she contracted smallpox at eighteen months. One of twelve children, she was educated by her family, who recited lessons from school. She started writing poetry at the age of seven. Granny’s Wonderful Chair is her most well-known children’s book.
