Grasshoppers Fighting

20th century

Macau Museum

Macau Museum
Lisbon, Portugal

The grasshopper symbolises courage and fighting spirit. Grasshopper fights date back to the eighth century and are still popular today in certain parts of Central and Southern China. Children catch the grasshoppers and train them for fights, which are held in the autumn and on market days. The pieces are signed by their makers.
