The cavalry cohort of the Africans was sent to the Low Countries during the Batavian Revolt (69-70) to restore peace. The Germanic soldier Gumattius evidently served in this cavalry cohort at the time. The inscription on the gravestone reads: ‘Marcus Traianius Gumattius, son of Gaisio, veteran of the cavalry cohort of the Africans, directed in his will that [this stone] be erected.’
