The archive houses two large boxes of Phyllis Tate's autograph manuscripts donated by her son. I had the privilege of spending a little time (fleeting) looking through the various paper scores, proofs, cuttings and handwritten, and typed notes. It was personal and poignant and I hope to have more time to spend with her work in the future. Phyllis Tate (1911-1987) was an intriguing composer. More can be read about her online. I have chosen two of my photographs to represent her here. This one is is a tableaux with the autograph manuscript for "Gravestones for Cleo Laine" (1966), (note the use of a wire brush specified for use on the side drum), a typed note describing her feelings about death, cuttings and a leaflet relating to the composition.
