National Constitution Center

National Constitution Center
Philadelphia, PA, United States

This ornate, imported plate was excavated on the site where James Dexter lived. Once enslaved, Dexter purchased his freedom in 1767 and served as a coachman to a wealthy family, becoming a prominent member of the community. While he mostly owned locally made wares, Dexter acquired some more expensive imports, indicating his relatively comfortable economic status and desire to entertain with a stylish table.
