This letter, to the Chief Commissioner of Police from the Secretary of the Oxley Shire Council, is dated a month before the Glenrowan siege. It is a request that the Police Station at Greta be reopened in light of the recent thefts in the town, including mouldboards. It is interesting to note that mouldboards were used to create the armour worn by the Kelly Gang and that other towns reported thefts of a similar nature. At this stage the police were unaware that the two were connected.

Reply 3/6/80Shire Office, Oxley, 12 May 1880 Sir, I have the honor, by direction of the Council at the Shire of Oxley, to request that Police protection might be provided for Greta. The Council have always been of the opinion that the removal of the Police from the Greta Station has been a loss to the district, and I am directed to bring under your notice that recently a number of thefts have taken place in that neighbourhood of mouldboards & wheels of ploughs & other articles, to the great annoyance and loss of the owners who it is believed, in the absence of Police, are afraid to give information for fear of being further annoyed The Council therefore trust that you will be pleased to take this application into your early & favourable consideration.
