Mary painted the period sailing craft Elsa at Banyard’s Cove, Dartmouth, during filming for the BBC TV series The Onedin Line in 1971. She studied at Exeter in the 1920s and toured the Devon and Dorset coastline in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Evocative and romantic in feel, Mary William’s landscapes were mainly painted in watercolour. She was a Member of the Society of Woman Artists and was elected to the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in 1965 and was a regular exhibitor since 1950. The RWA has five of her watercolours in their permanent collection. In 1974 she held a solo exhibition at RAMM.
