Grotto Geyser Yellowstone

Grotto Geyser is a fountain-type geyser in Yellowstone National Park (established 1872). The geyser's cone is eight feet high, and its odd shape comes from the sinter that accumulated over dead tree stumps as the geyser erupted.

A topographic artist, lithographer, and landscape painter, Brown was born in Pennsylvania and moved to San Francisco in 1855, becoming California's first African American artist. From 1861 to 1867, he worked as a lithographer, but upon moving to Canada in the early 1870s, he increasingly pursued landscape painting. In subsequent years, he painted landscapes in both Yellowstone and Yosemite as well as in Washington and Oregon.
