  • About the Work: This work belongs to a project that explores the construction process of personal identity. According to Roberto Huarcaya, a union of diverse elements, experiences and, influences, constructs personal identity. The elements that constitute one’s final personal identity join together at different levels: the intimate, the familiar, the local, the national, the regional, and the finally, the global. This photograph depicts one of the first associations made during the creation of a Peruvian identity: It is a representation of one of the indigenous animals that is also a pre-Columbian icon: El Guanaco. Images of the guinea pig and the Peruvian dog are also included in this series. These types of animals were found in pre-Hispanic archeological excavations proving that they were used during earlier periods as pets and food. There fur was used for weaving. These animals, based on the country’s historical and cultural past, have played a major role in the formation of the primary Peruvian identity.
