The subject matter of this painting is unique, and the visual effect is stunning. The Goddess of Mercy is portrayed amidst a sea of fire. The serene look on her face and the fluidly draping lines of her robe are in stark contrast to the tongues of fire around her. Her merciful countenance inspires confidence in those hoping to seek salvation. This painting was completed in 1943, during the Second World War. Huang was touched by the suffering of the people as they faced the ravages of war, epidemics and death. The Goddess of Mercy he drew here was meant to represent a solace to troubled hearts.
