The Bavarian painter Karl Santner, who was employed at the court of Federico Gonzago, Duke of Mantua, created a complex and picturesque composition with subject matter relating to the Counter-Reformation for the new Capuchin church dedicated to St Martha in Koper. The figure of the angel, in the role of a guide and a being of light, indicates the true path leading to the Kingdom of Heaven and the Holy Trinity: the path of childlike purity of soul.
